Open and Affirming Ministry

Vince and Rachelle AmlinWhat is an “Open and Affirming” Church?
Open and Affirming is the way many in the United Church of Christ (UCC) declare their welcome and inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons into the full life of the church. The message of love and compassion, justice and peace are at the very core of the life and ministry of Jesus. Open and Affirming (ONA) ministries and resources are rooted in that Gospel message. The testimonies of these ministries proclaim the truth of God's power to transform cultures of hate and violence into communities of healing and reconciliation. They give witness to the ways in which the gifts of God are being liberated for service in the world.

What we believe about LGBT persons…
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons are full members of this congregation and beloved children of God. For an interesting essay about the Bible and Homosexuality by renowned Biblical scholar and theologian, Rev. Dr. Walter Wink click here

At UCG, we preach the good news that all are welcome in this place. For examples of previous sermons on LGBT themes click here or here.

What we’re doing about it…
At UCG, we believe that Open and Affirming is a verb, a part of our identity which calls for action. To that end, our ONA/ GLBT Committee plans seminars, small groups, social outings, and service opportunities with the goal of celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion of all God’s people both here and in the wider community. UCG is a proud member of the Pride Community Center of North Central Florida

Each Fall, we participate in the community Pride Festival and celebrate in worship with a special Pride service. We also look for ways to reach out into the community to help and serve those who are the victims of discrimination and prejudice. We hope to partner with similar churches and organizations in Gainesville and throughout Florida, to bring the message of love and inclusion to everyone.
